Scotland’s gin boom, on the ground
Scotland now has one of the densest gin scenes in Europe. Many makers sit inside whisky distilleries, using spare still time and local botanicals. Others are purpose-built city distilleries with cocktail bars attached. A gin tour here is rarely just a branded gift shop: you will usually see a copper still, smell juniper and citrus, and taste a range that includes classic London Dry, contemporary citrus gins and cask-aged expressions.
Edinburgh is the easiest city for gin. Edinburgh Gin, Holyrood and several smaller producers put stills in walking distance of hotels and whisky bars. Glasgow’s makers sit in former industrial buildings, often pairing gin with whisky under the same roof. Further north, Highland and island gins lean on coastal botanicals, pine, heather and local grain.
