Distillery tours in Speyside

Speyside is not a political region so much as a whisky landscape: the River Spey and its tributaries, a run of towns from Elgin to Dufftown, and more malt distilleries per mile than anywhere else in Scotland. About half of all Scotch malt is made here. The style is often associated with fruit, honey and vanilla, though the valley also produces heavily sherried, smoky and experimental whiskies.

Dufftown alone is home to Glenfiddich, Balvenie and several neighbours. Aberlour, Craigellachie and Rothes sit along the same short stretch of river. Glenlivet occupies the glen that helped define Speyside as a name, while Macallan’s estate above the Spey has become one of the most visited distilleries in the world. Smaller sites such as Benromach in Forres keep floor maltings, traditional worm tubs and hands-on tours that show how the valley still works at a human scale.
